At this salon, His Eminence Otani Guen, Head of the Otani School, and Professor Hirahara engaged in a dialogue on the anime Ghost in the Shell and the Buddhist philosophy of “Yogācāra.” As an overview of Yogācāra, the Head of the Otani Sect explained the concept of “emptiness” (śūnyatā)—the idea that all existence is constituted by interrelationships—and the structure in which even “consciousness” (vijñāna), the faculty of perception, is not a fixed entity. He also touched on similarities with the works of Yukio Mishima and Carl Jung’s collective unconscious.

Professor Hirahara pointed out that in modern cognitive science, the “unconscious” tends to be viewed not as a “structure,” as it once was, but as a subliminal “process.” Nevertheless, he noted that Jung’s concept of the collective unconscious—which posits the existence of archetypes that transcend culture—remains highly compelling, and he provided a detailed explanation. In doing so, he discussed how the cyberized world of Ghost in the Shell can be analogized to the structure of the collective unconscious and the conscious mind in that consciousness is connected through physical networks.

The two also exchanged views on the limitations of logical understanding through language and the importance of experiences gained through physical practices such as zazen and nenbutsu. Participants asked questions about the trickster-like figures in Jodo Shinshu and the appropriate perspective from which to view the film; Grand Master Otani and Professor Hirahara provided detailed answers to these questions.

本サロンでは、大谷愚烟御門主台下と平原教授が、アニメ『攻殻機動隊』と仏教の「瑜伽行唯識」思想をテーマに対談した。大谷門主は、唯識の概要として、すべての存在は関係性で成り立つという「空」の思想と、認識の意識である「識」もまた確かなものではないという構造を説明し、三島由紀夫の作品やユングの集合的無意識との類似性に触れた。

平原教授は、現代の認知科学では「無意識」はかつてのように「構造」ではなくサブリミナルな「プロセス」として捉える傾向があることを指摘しつつ、それでもユングの集合的無意識が文化を超えた元型（アーキタイプ）を持つという考え方はとても魅力的であると指摘し、詳しく解説した。その際に彼は、『攻殻機動隊』の電脳化された世界が、物理的なネットワークを通じて意識が繋がるという点で、集合的無意識や有意識の構造と類比できる点を語った。

また、言葉による論理的理解の限界と、座禅や念仏のような身体的実践を通じて得られる体験の重要性についても二人は意見を交わした。参加者からは、浄土真宗におけるトリックスター的な人物像や、本作品をどのような観点で視聴すべきかといった質問があり、それらに対して大谷門主と平原教授が詳しく回答した。
