During the seminar, the two speakers discussed the background of *Ghost in the Shell* and the question of whether AI possesses a mind or soul, confirming that the 1995 animated film was a significant work created during the emergence of the AI and the Internet became widely known. Professor Hirahara pointed out that, unlike previous booms, the current Fourth AI Boom has led ordinary people to use AI tools on a daily basis, making the question of whether AI possesses a mind or soul feel more relatable—to the point where it has become almost a topic for casual conversation over drinks. He emphasized that the worldview of the original author, Masamune Shirow, closely resembles today’s technological worldview—even though the general public had no understanding of AI or the internet at the time—and concluded that the question of whether AI possesses a mind or a soul is meaningful precisely now that AI has become commoditized and widespread.
