Vol. 76: “Will Physical AI Put an End to Manual Labor?”|「フィジカルAIで肉体労働もなくなるのか?」

A discussion on the future of physical AI and manual labor was held between His Eminence Otani Guwen, Head of the Hongwanji Sect, and Professor Hirahara. Professor Hirahara described physical AI as “the fusion of robotics and AI” and discussed the background behind the development of robotics such as Aibo and Asimo in perspective. During the discussion, they explored the possibility that advancements in AI technology could bring about changes as significant as those of the Industrial Revolution, and specifically cited an incident in which AI-related remarks were met with boos at many graduation ceremonies at U.S. universities. Participants shared their concern that, although AI technology was initially met with high expectations, public sentiment has shifted over time to one of skepticism, and they expressed worry about the social impacts, such as a reduction in job opportunities.
