The main purpose of this salon, held under the theme “Passion and Business: What’s Wrong with Making Money?,” was to discuss the relationship between business and money from a Buddhist perspective. At the beginning of the seminar, Mr. Nishihara discussed the meaning of profit in the context of passion and business, as well as giving back to society, and shared his thoughts on the criteria for evaluating money in a capitalist society. Professor Hirahara explained in detail the complex relationship Japanese people have with money and, citing the Murakami Fund scandal as an example, pointed out that Japanese perceptions of money have not changed much from 20 years ago to the present.

Mr. Nishihara shared his experiences in Texas and, citing the example of a temple run by a Vietnamese monk, spoke about the potential for a positive integration of Buddhist values and business activities. Professor Hirahara highlighted the lack of a clear stance on money within the Japanese Buddhist community as a problem and, drawing a comparison with Protestant churches in the United States, pointed out that some form of clear guidance from religious leaders is necessary in these uncertain times. In the discussion on money, the Head Priest of Otani spoke about how it is treated in Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam. He noted that none of these religions has clear-cut rules regarding money and explained that the way it is handled varies depending on the era and the leaders of each religion. Referring to the situation in which religious organizations have lost their guiding principles regarding money, he expressed concern that believers may also be losing their sense of direction.

今回のサロンでは「パッションとビジネスお金儲けをして何が悪いんですか？」というテーマで、仏教的視点からビジネスとお金の関係について議論することが主な目的でした。セミナーの冒頭では、西原氏がパッションとビジネスにおける利益の意味、そして社会への還元について言及し、資本主義社会におけるお金の評価基準についての考え方を共有しました。平原教授は日本人のお金に対する複雑な関係性について詳しく説明し、村上ファンド事件を例に挙げて、20年前から現在まで日本人のお金に対する認識があまり変化していないことを指摘しました。

西原氏はテキサスでの経験を共有し、ベトナム人の僧侶が運営する寺院の例を紹介して、仏教的価値観とビジネス活動のポジティブな融合の可能性について話しました。平原教授は日本の仏教界におけるお金に対する明確な姿勢の欠如を問題視し、アメリカのプロテスタント教会との比較を通じて、宗教的指導者からの何らかの明確な指導が今の不透明な時代には必要だと指摘しました。大谷門主はお金についての議論において、仏教、キリスト教、イスラム教における扱いについて話しました。彼は各宗教が明確なお金の規定を持っていないことを指摘し、各宗教での運用方法は時代やリーダーによって変化していることを説明しました。宗教組織がお金についてのガイドを失っている状況について言及し、信者が方向感を失っている可能性があることも懸念しました。
