The seminar discussed the concept of “San’gan Ten’nyū” (the Transfer of the Three Vows) in Jōdo Shinshū and explored the path to attaining Amida Buddha’s Primal Vow (the 18th of the 48 Vows). Participants engaged in detailed discussions about the gradual transition from self-powered nembutsu to other-powered nembutsu, and the process of ultimately reaching the Primal Vow. They also debated whether Shinran Shōnin followed this path and examined the background behind the formation of this concept at Nishi Hongan-ji during the Edo period. Additionally, during the first online salon conversation of the new year, the Head Priest of Otani spoke about his premonitions for 2026, mentioning the issue of population decline and the astronomical phenomenon known as “Nichi-ka no Arima” (the relationship between Mars and the Sun). The conversation also touched on political topics, with particular discussion focused on the Trump administration, Venezuela, Iran, and issues concerning Greenland. In the latter half of the conversation, concerns were shared regarding recent political developments and immigration issues in the United States.
