How many more years do we have to wait for a female scientist to sit at the top of the engineering faculty at a leading Japanese university? I seem to recall a bit of such talk at Tokyo Institute of Technology once, but it did not surface at full.
In the United States, several of the top universities have already experienced this. Berkeley is no exception, having experienced seven years of very strong female scientific leadership. And her next position is at the head of the National Academy of Engineering. It’s monstrous and wonderful.
It is the current President of the United States who is doing his very best to destroy these good trends. Therefore, we can see the resistance to it in Dr. Liu’s last words:
“Our collective efforts to address unconscious bias, to foster a supportive learning environment and cultivate a growth mindset, and to build an empowering community have made Berkeley Engineering more welcoming and inclusive, rather than competitive and exclusive.”
These are very powerful words. When I hear these words filled with warm intellectualism, I think America can still do well.
日本の有力大学で、工学部のトップに女性科学者が座るには、あと何年ほど待てばいいでしょうか?一度、東工大で少しそのような話があったように記憶しますが、表には出ませんでした。
アメリカ合衆国では、トップ大学のいくつかが既に体験済みです。バークレーもご多分に漏れずで、7年間の非常に強い女性科学者によるリーダーシップを経験しました。そして彼女の次のポジションは、National Academy of Engineeringのトップです。怪物じみていて素敵ですね。
こうした良い潮流をぶち壊そうと頑張っているのが、現職のアメリカ大統領ですね。よって、Liu博士の最後の言葉にもそこへの抵抗が見て取れる。
